Physical Education
Intent
The underlying principles behind our approach to sport are as follows:
- Taking part in sport, and enjoying doing so, is the birth right of all pupils
- Competitive sport is not antithetical to a school ethos that holds equality of opportunity in the highest regard
- Captivating and sustaining pupils’ interest in sport at an early age will lead to a lifelong interest and involvement in sport and physical activity
- Our ‘head heart and hands’ approach will develop the whole child through ensuring an understanding of:
| Rules | Communication | Physical ability |
| Knowledge | Effort | Fitness levels |
| Understanding | Confidence | Competitive |
| Responsibility | Resilience | Technique |
| Analysis | Respect | Tactics |
| Feedback | Leadership | Problem solving |
Put simply, we want all children to take part in and enjoy sport and physical activity; we also want them to be aware of the importance of physical activity and sport in leading a healthy lifestyle. Staff at school work long and hard to offer as many sporting opportunities to children as possible. This is achieved through our extensive curricular and extracurricular opportunities, open to all. All children participate in a minimum of two hours of physical education (PE) lessons a week: one hour indoor (taught by the class teacher) and one hour outdoor (taught by a PE specialist).
Children in early years have an initial focus on active play to develop their fine and gross motor skills. The skills they develop in these years will facilitate the learning in KS1 and improve their confidence within Physical Education (PE). The main focus in PE for EYFS is that children enjoy themselves.
Children will develop fundamental movement skills (running, jumping, throwing and catching) and become increasingly competent in extending their ABCs (agility balance and co-ordination). They will engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.
A key part of KS1 PE is showing effort and resilience. It’s important for children to learn that they might not be successful the first time, but if they show resilience and keep trying, they will succeed.
The most important part of PE at Barnes is that children are enjoying themselves and having fun.
Pupils will continue to apply and develop a wider range of skills that can be applied to an extensive variety of sports that will be covered at Barnes Primary such as:
• athletics
• cricket
• dance
• football
• gymnastics
• netball
• orienteering
• rounders
• tag rugby
• swimming
• tennis
In Key Stage 2 there is a focus on teamwork and collaborating together to succeed at a common goal. Our aim is to develop the whole child and promote a love for a wide range of sports, so they enjoy being physically active, ready for their transition to secondary school where we hope they will continue with a lifelong participation in sport.
The most important part of PE at Barnes is that children are enjoying themselves and having fun.
We are firmly committed to ensuring every child has the opportunity to compete in sport. We aim to provide as many opportunities as possible for children to play competitively and represent their school. As a result, in addition to the borough and league sporting events, we also organise friendly school matches, house events and inter-school match opportunities (two teams from Barnes Primary School playing each other) on a regular basis.
For all borough, league and inter-school matches or ‘friendlies’, places will be allocated based on a range of criteria: sport performance, effort, behaviour and embodiment of school values. Sportspersonship, creativity, curiosity, empathy, integrity, positivity, self-belief, responsibility and resilience are important aspects which are considered in competition selection. We use trial and observation to support team selection:
- Specific sport trials conducted by the PE teacher
- Observations by class teachers in timetabled lessons
- Observations during the extra-curricular clubs run by members of Barnes Primary staff or external providers.
Getting more practice by attending an extra-curricular club will certainly lead to those involved securing improvements in ability, but it does not automatically follow that a pupil attending will secure a place in the school team.
All children are involved in competition in our Sports day events, when they represent their house.
EYFS: July
KS1: July
KS2: September and July
There is always great enthusiasm for participating in our fixtures. Unfortunately the number of participants that we can take is limited. As a result there is always a great deal of discussion over our selections. This is always a good headache to have when the standard is so high. We encourage all children to be very proud of their achievement so far and for putting themselves forward for a trial. If they are not successful, we will always encourage them to keep trialling. We fully appreciate that some children may really want to represent the school but may, at the time of selection, not be at the same standard as those pupils who are chosen at the time. This is a hard lesson for all children (and adults), but it is one that we aim to support children with, so that they can develop their resilience and have the confidence and determination to try again next time.
